This mod is a pack of unique dialogues for the characters of Ridgeside Village for giving and receiving gifts at the Winter Star, if they are eligible to do so!
This includes 44 villagers so it would be probably a bit much to list all of them, but 40 baseline villagers along with Bryle, Zayne, Jio, and Daia (who are all not normally eligible) are given new dialogue in this particular expansion. If you believe a character is missing, let me know - however, Winter Star exclusions are unlikely to change without a relevant update from RSV. (Of note, Kiwi and Torts are not a part of this list for lore reasons, so they cannot give you a gift at the Star.)
But enough early descriptions. What actually changes?
As with Unique Winter Star, due to the probability of an override dialogue from other modpacks (or the mod itself!) specifying particular gift reactions and the fact that the key is meant to respond to any gift, dialogue changes are generally small to gifting RSV villagers gifts - mainly, most changes will approximate the villager's personality, with some dynamic tweaks dependent on where you are in their story arc. If you're interested in which dialogues are dynamic, there's a spoiler list below.
- Ezekiel, Maive, Aguar, and Louie will all have a frosty reception for your gift unless you have 6 hearts or more with them, at which point they'll defrost significantly (at least in terms of attitude toward you - don't expect Louie to suddenly turn nice, even at the Winter Star!)
- Shiro will have a minor dialogue alteration if he is 6 hearts or higher.
- Kiarra will be very unhappy to see you if you went the Joja route, in line with her refusal to marry the player if they went the Joja route. It won't modify your friendship with her any more than usual, but she'll be bummed her gifter was you.
- Maddie will be unenthused to see you unless you've gained 6+ hearts with her, at which point her response will be significantly warmer to the player.
- Dating Villagers have their own dialogue variants!
- Married Villagers have their own dialogue variants!
- If relevant (e.g. the character exists in the Platonic Partners and Friendships beta for Ridgeside), there will be friend and housemate variants for the characters as well, if enabled from the config. As the Platonic Ridgeside beta is not fully updated for 1.6 yet, the lines will not automatically be applied, and must be specified as platonic from the config.
Like Unique Winter Star, each villager will have a specific reaction to being your gifter. RSV characters actually do have some gifts specific to each character, so where relevant the dialogue lines will reflect this (Kenneth, for example, will note his present is a lot of battery packs!).
This portion also dynamically changes with many characters with story progression and heart levels. It's a bit of a trial to make changes for every single character in a set of 44 characters, so some will only have a singular line, whereas some characters like Jeric may have variant lines for events and platonic variants for PPAF Ridgeside as well as dating/married ones. A full list of changes is below - fair warning, it's quite long!
Note that presently unlike the two prior parts of this mod, this mod does not contain in-law dialogue - I only had so much time to devote to this mod this holiday season, so that fell by the wayside! There hopefully will eventually be future updates to this that will add in-law dialogue, but given the amount of people who would have a relevant dialogue (Louie, Ariah, Sonny, and Maive, along with potentially Irene, all having comments on Zayne, for example), this will not be in the initial release.
Full list of dialogues that change based on conditions:
Regular changes:
- As with the above, Ezekiel, Aguar, and Louie will all be incredibly frosty toward you if below 6 hearts. Above 6 hearts, they'll be a lot more nice toward you (though probably not toward anyone else!). [Maive does not have a variated dialogue here as her dialogue works well at any heart level.]
- Malaya's dialogue will change depending on when you get her unlocked (even if said unlock date isn't in Year 1!) and if the pastry shop is open.
- Ariah's dialogue will change if you've seen her 8 heart event, to reflect you being one of her only two friends in the Valley.
- Keahi's dialogue will be affected if he's pranked you - not by much since he doesn't change, but he'll at least acknowledge you're probably expecting a prank!
Datable Villagers will have their own gift dialogues, and:
- Maddie's dialogue will be complicated (like her feelings toward the farmer!). If the farmer is low hearts with her, she'll be a lot ruder toward the farmer. If she's medium or high hearts, she'll be somewhat tsundere about her gift, and if you've seen her high 8 heart event (just short of 9 hearts, maximum friendship without bouquet necessary), she'll be very nice toward you, to reflect her character development.
- Alissa's dialogue will change based on seeing her 8 heart, as it will reflect her attitude toward singing in front of others.
- Corine's dialogue will have a minor change if she's started training with Jio.
- Kiarra will be sad if you completed the Joja route. (Unfortunately, time with family has left her reflecting on her true friends, and this affects her mood a la her marriage refusal if you picked the Joja route!)
- Jeric will have a variant line referencing the picnic if you've started dating him (or become best friends, if PPAF).
- Bryle (if enabled) and Faye will have dialogue alterations if you've set them on their Rival Hearts path. (If you've unlocked them for romance, they're already at 8 hearts and should be given a bouquet for the dating variant, so no player-dating variant on normal path!).
- Anton and Paula will also have dialogue alterations if they've been set on the Rival Hearts path. (Similar to the above, if they're unlocked for romance, just immediately give them a bouquet for new dialogue!)
- Flor, Alissa, Corine, Jeric, and Ian will all have platonic dialogue if you're at 9+ hearts or dating them and you've set them to platonic (for compatibility with the Ridgeside Beta for Platonic Partners and Friendships).
Married villagers will also have their own gift dialogues, and:
- As with Unique Winter Star, there is a double unlock spice configuration to imply your spouse's physical desire for you for all eligible marriage candidates that can give a gift. The spice in this pack can range from mild (Ian, Alissa) to fairly risque depending on the spouse in question (though whether that spice is well written is up to you, the player! Feel free to make your own edits to the i18n).
- If desired, Flor, Jeric, Alissa, Corine, and Ian can all be set to platonic to get housemate dialogue while installed.
- Maddie's dialogue for her marriage variant is slightly edited if you've got Nonbinary They/Them Maddie installed.
- For simplicity (and due to time constraints), spice dialogue is the only part of the marriage dialogue affected. There may be more variants in the future, but for now it's either marriage dialogue or spice (or PPAF).
More variants may be added in the future, but for now due to time these are the only variant lines.
The power of Stardew Valley 1.6 allows for people to be set as gifters, even if they were previously unable to give gifts. With permission of Raf, this mod (configurably) allows Bryle, Zayne, Jio, and Daia to be gifters - none are originally allowed to gift, even though they show up! For more specifics on each:
- Bryle will participate in the gift or food exchange once he's unlocked.
- Zayne will particpate once his 8 heart event has been seen and he's permanently in the Valley to take his position as Amethyne head.
- Daia and Jio will both participate in the Winter Star exchange once the Spirit Realm has been completed. For lore purposes, they're participating to blend in with the villagers, and not because they're aware of the Winter Star overall - the exception to this is if they're married, where it's perfectly normal for them to participate as the spouse of the farmer.
Note that at present these are the only four who can participate that previously could not - Kiwi, Torts, Undreya, Bliss, and other hidden NPCs which don't show up at the Star will not join the festivities (and won't without a relevant lore reason - Kiwi, for example, is not allowed as it wouldn't make sense for a rolling kiwi to be given a secret friend, and would be extremely visible giving you a gift!).
Choose Your Winter Star Gifter!
With the release of SDV 1.6, patching whether people can gift you at the Winter Star has never been easier! If you don't want Keahi to gift you or really hate Maive for her transgressions, you can remove them from the gift pool.
This mod, on its own, just affects RSV villagers. With Unique Winter Star installed, you can feasibly have just Maddie and Daia in the pool and get/receive gifts from only them! Simply disable vanilla people at the Winter Star and whatever RSV characters you don't want to gift and you'll end up being able to choose your Winter Star gifter/giftee. Additionally, if you have SVE, you can use Unique Winter Star - SVE as well to modify if those villagers can gift you - using all three means you could feasibly make your gift pool Abigail, Sophia, and Flor using these mods!
As with UWS, please make sure to always have two or more people in the Winter Star gift pool. Having one may lead to unintended outcomes, and having zero will crash your game (so make sure at least one person's enabled at all times). In general, having only one enabled will result in that villager being your gifter AND giftee, and a momentary pause before they can give you the gift (so it will look like the game has frozen) - it's best to always have two.
The configurations in this pack are essentially carbon copies of Unique Winter Star. For clarity's sake, what they do are contained in the spoiler section below, but if you've played with Unique Winter Star, you likely get the idea (and can skip over this). More will be added if more features are added, but for this mod it's fairly intuitive as to what does what at present.
- Enable Spicy Dialogues and <Villager Name>: Double unlock, to prevent spicy dialogues from being accidentally activated. To have the spicy dialogue from a villager, check the Enable Spicy Dialogue box and swap whichever villager or villagers can use spicy dialogue. While you can enable every single one, you will only see results for every villager if you've installed a polyamory mod like Polyamory, Free Love or PolyamorySweet and moved the relevant villager into your house. Otherwise, you can only have one spouse - and thus one set of spicy dialogue!
- <NPC Name>: Choose whether the villager is in the gift pool and whether they have this mod's dialogue changes applied.
This pack is meant for use with Ridgeside Village, so is compatible with that, and will not interfere with other expansion mods installed. However, there are some notable differences from my prior packs for the vanilla characters.
- Unique Winter Star: This mod is designed to be used alongside the original Unique Winter Star, but does not need it to be installed. Feel free to just run this pack and not the original if you just want changed dialogues for only the RSV characters, or to run both. This is also compatible with the SVE pack for this mod, although no extra features are obtained other than the ability to customize SVE characters and add/remove them from the gift pool.
- Solstice Winter Star: As Ridgeside Village is compatible with Solstice, this mod contains Solstice variants for every single dialogue. Yes, every single piece of dialogue in this pack has a variant for Solstice Winter Star. On its own, this mod has as many if not more lines than the original Unique Winter Star, and it doesn't even have In-Law dialogue yet! (There's a reason why this doesn't have as many features right now!)
- Platonic Partners and Friendships: If you have the Platonic Beta from PPAF working for 1.6 or have Platonic Relationships, Flor, Alissa, Corine, Jeric, and Ian all have a fifth config option known as "use platonic dialogues only" ("platonic" in the code) that work with the original PPAF installed. This allows them to use a non-romantic variant of their lines if they're friends or - with the beta - housemates.
This mod should have gender neutral dialogue - if there are any problem areas, let me know, or if there's better phrasing.
This mod is also fully i18ned and thus fully translatable! If you'd like to make a translation, simply request to do so on the posts section and assuming there hasn't been another translation of the same language, then you should be approved in short order. The translation can simply be a JSON file that is dropped into the i18n folder rather than a complete reproduction of the mod. (Godspeed, though - this will be a rough one to translate, given the amount of lines.)
On its own, this mod is now in a usable state! It is missing a few features from my other packs which will be added over time, if possible, but for a quick rundown:
- I want to write In-Law Dialogues, so that will probably be in the first major update for this unless I have no inspiration for writing them when it's not the holidays.
- Custom Gifts is a project I'll tackle at another time - they may be added to this mod as a config, added directly to the main mod and dialogues altered here, or not added at all depending on my inspiration and the willingness of the RSV team to accept added gifts.
- Full PPAF compatibility will be added as the Platonic Ridgeside Beta is updated.
Unlike Unique Winter Star, this mod is a pack of dialogues made for a mod which is constantly being updated. It can be used at present and should be fine even should Ridgeside update, but this is not always a guarantee. If a dialogue is improperly firing (or not firing), it may be due to an event id change, an internal name change, or any number of issues. Let me know and realistically I should be able to bugfix as soon as possible.
Additionally, there will likely be a few bugfix updates, but for a mod of this size it'll be the goal to collect a few bugs before patching, even if there's only one line issue, so I may be a bit slower to patch this.
Thank you to the following, without whom this mod would have been impossible to create:
Rafseazz for kindly allowing full permission to create dialogues for the Ridgeside Village characters (I ended up asking a full year ago! This has been a long development hell on my end)
Pathoschild for helping maintain and create SMAPI/Content Patcher, as well as for help on a temporary token to remove issues
ConcernedApe for making the game
And members of the Stardew Valley discord for looking over my dialogue and providing feedback - going through roughly 40 characters in roughly two weeks was a trial and a half, so it was always good to get feedback!
(Also, if you're wondering which outfits the characters are wearing in the screenshot, I'm using Seasonal Outfits for Ridgeside Village for the RSV characters. For the SVE characters I prefer the Seasonal Outfits for SVE (Vanilla Style) outfits, while the vanilla villagers are still in their Seasonal Outfits - Slightly Cuter Aesthetic sprites. Feel free to check all of them out!)
